Part 61 flight school · KDAW · Rochester, New Hampshire

Learn to fly at
Skyhaven.

Technique Only trains pilots at two untowered New England fields — Skyhaven in Rochester and Limington-Harmon in southern Maine. Sport Pilot through CFI, at whatever pace a real life allows.

No experience needed. A Discovery Flight is one flight, one instructor — nothing to commit to.

Take a Discovery Flight

A Discovery Flight is a real lesson, not a tour. A few minutes in, the controls pass to you, with a Certified Flight Instructor on a second set the whole time.

You’ll fly with a person, not a company.

Fly better.

Flight training got expensive and impersonal, and a lot of schools decided that was fine. Technique Only was built the other way around — small fields, hours billed as hours flown, and room for anyone who wants to be here.

Two untowered fields

Skyhaven and Limington-Harmon are both non-towered, which means the pattern belongs to the aircraft in it. A lesson starts when the airplane is ready, not when a tower has worked through the line.

The Hobbs stops when the flying does

Instructors here do not run the meter on the ground. Briefings, debriefs and the walk back to the hangar are not billed as flight time — that is a house rule, not a promotion.

Sport pilots are pilots

The Sport Pilot certificate is a full training path here, not a consolation prize handed to someone who asked about a medical. Plenty of people fly for a lifetime on it.

A community, not a counter

Students share the ramp with instructors, owners, time builders and people who turn up because they like being at the airport. That is the part of aviation that keeps people flying after the checkride.

The airplanes, and where they live

Technique Only flies multiple aircraft across two fields — Skyhaven Airport in Rochester, New Hampshire and Limington-Harmon Airport in southern Maine. The same airframes carry Sport Pilot students, Private and Instrument students, and renters building time.

  • Two home fields: KDAW and 63B
  • Available for rental once you are checked out
  • Time building for pilots who already have a certificate
  • Sport Pilot training paths supported

It adds up one hour at a time.

A Discovery Flight is $175. Everything past that is quoted against the certificate being chased, and the hours are billed as hours flown — ground time is not on the meter.

Common first questions

The questions every first-time student asks before they book.

01 Do I need any previous experience to start?

No. Most people who book a Discovery Flight have never touched the controls of an airplane, and the first lesson is built for exactly that. Everything is taught from the beginning, in the order it is needed.

02 What is a Discovery Flight?

A real first flight lesson with a Certified Flight Instructor — $175 at Technique Only. A few minutes after takeoff the controls pass to you, with the instructor on a second set the whole time, and the flight is logged as instruction received whether or not you ever come back.

03 Is it safe?

Training aircraft are maintained to an FAA inspection schedule and flown by two people, with the instructor on a full second set of controls for every lesson. Weather cancels flights here, and that is normal: a lesson that gets moved is an instructor doing their job, not a school being difficult.

04 How much does it cost to earn a Private Pilot License?

It depends on the certificate and the pace, so it is quoted against a plan rather than published as one number. Training is paid for lesson by lesson as it is flown, and instructors here do not run the Hobbs on the ground, so briefings and debriefs are not billed as flight time. A call and a few questions produce a real figure.

05 How do I get started?

One phone call to (207) 200-7548, or a Discovery Flight booked online. The first flight is the whole first step — everything after it gets decided on the ground afterwards.
