More questions

Do I need any previous experience to start?

No. Most people who book a Discovery Flight have never touched the controls of an airplane, and the first lesson is built for exactly that. Everything is taught from the beginning, in the order it is needed.

What is a Discovery Flight?

A real first flight lesson with a Certified Flight Instructor — $175 at Technique Only. A few minutes after takeoff the controls pass to you, with the instructor on a second set the whole time, and the flight is logged as instruction received whether or not you ever come back.

Is it safe?

Training aircraft are maintained to an FAA inspection schedule and flown by two people, with the instructor on a full second set of controls for every lesson. Weather cancels flights here, and that is normal: a lesson that gets moved is an instructor doing their job, not a school being difficult.

How much does it cost to earn a Private Pilot License?

It depends on the certificate and the pace, so it is quoted against a plan rather than published as one number. Training is paid for lesson by lesson as it is flown, and instructors here do not run the Hobbs on the ground, so briefings and debriefs are not billed as flight time. A call and a few questions produce a real figure.

How long does it take to get my license?

Frequency decides it. A student flying two or three times a week finishes far sooner than one flying twice a month, because long gaps mean paying to re-learn. Part 61 training does not run on a class calendar, so the schedule bends around a working life.

Do I need a medical certificate?

For the Private Pilot certificate, yes — at least a third-class medical from an FAA-designated aviation medical examiner before solo flight. The Sport Pilot route is the exception a lot of people are looking for: it does not require an FAA medical certificate, which is part of why it is a full training path here rather than an afterthought.

What aircraft will I train in?

Technique Only flies multiple aircraft across its two fields, and the current list is worth asking about directly — a school’s fleet changes, and a website is the last place to hear about it. The aircraft are also available to rent once a checkout is complete.

Are you a Part 61 or Part 141 school?

Part 61. In practice that means the training sequence bends around your life instead of a fixed course calendar — lessons can be rearranged, and the pace is set by how often you fly rather than by an enrolment date.

Can I finance my flight training?

Not through Technique Only — there is no lending partner and no programme price to borrow against, because training is paid for lesson by lesson as it happens. Aviation scholarships are a genuine route, and the ones worth applying for are listed on the paying-for-training page.

Where are you located?

At Skyhaven Airport (KDAW), 238 Rochester Hill Rd, Rochester, New Hampshire, with a second base at Limington-Harmon Airport (63B) in southern Maine. Rochester is roughly twenty minutes from Dover and half an hour from Portsmouth.

Can flight training be a career?

Yes, and the path runs Private, Instrument, Commercial, then CFI — each one a certificate in its own right. Most career pilots build the hours between Commercial and their first job by instructing, which is why the CFI certificate matters as much as the flying does.

How do I get started?

One phone call to (207) 200-7548, or a Discovery Flight booked online. The first flight is the whole first step — everything after it gets decided on the ground afterwards.

How old are the airplanes, and how are they maintained?

Every training aircraft in the United States runs on an FAA inspection schedule — a 100-hour inspection between annuals for aircraft used for instruction — and age matters far less than that record. Specific airframe details are worth asking about on a first visit, when the logbooks are on the table.

How many aircraft do you have, and will I always get one?

Technique Only flies multiple aircraft across two fields, and availability is a question for the phone rather than a page — it moves with the season and the student roster. Booking a regular slot is the reliable way to keep an airplane.

Will I train in the same airplane every lesson?

Usually, and that is worth wanting: consistency in the cockpit means less time relearning where things are. Flying a second type later is a deliberate step, not an accident of scheduling.

Do the aircraft have glass cockpits or steam gauges?

Both are legitimate training environments, and the panel matters less than the habit. A pilot taught to fly attitude first transfers to either; a pilot taught to stare at one screen transfers to neither. Panel details for the current fleet are worth confirming directly.

What does financing actually cover?

Nothing here — Technique Only does not offer financing. Where students do use outside money, it typically covers aircraft and instruction and not the extras: the medical, headset, books, and FAA written and practical test fees.

Do I need to finance the whole program up front?

There is no programme to finance up front. Training here is billed as it is flown, so the monthly cost is set by how often the flying happens.

Is there parking, and where do I go on my first visit?

Skyhaven has visitor parking on the field at 238 Rochester Hill Rd, and the flight is met on the ramp rather than at a desk. A call before a first visit gets you pointed at the right door — small airports are confusing exactly once.

Can friends or family come and watch?

Yes. Skyhaven is a small non-towered field, so people can watch a departure from the parking area without an escort. Whether a guest can go out to the ramp itself is worth asking when the flight gets booked.

Which airport do you fly out of?

Skyhaven Airport, identifier KDAW, on Rochester Hill Road in Rochester, New Hampshire — a single 4,000-foot runway, non-towered. The school also operates from Limington-Harmon Airport (63B) in southern Maine.
